KhoslaVed Mitter Khosla, DDS, FDS, RCS, a long-time faculty member in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the UCSF School of Dentistry, passed away on August 17, 2011 at the age of 85.

Dr. Khosla was born in Tanzania and attended dental school in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he also took his fellowship examination in oral and maxillofacial surgery. While a student abroad he married his wife, Santosh, a physician from India, returning to Tanzania in 1957 to make a life there.  But the political situation had changed and in East Africa, and in 1962 they left for Saskatchewan, Canada, moving on to Northern California in 1967.

Khosla was appointed to the faculty at San Francisco General Hospital, and became Chief of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service at San Francisco General Hospital in 1968, continuing in that position until 1979, when Newton C. Gordon became the Chief. He remained on the faculty at San Francisco General Hospital until 1993, when he became an emeritus professor. Santosh Khosla, meanwhile, became the medical director at Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco.

Always been a strong supporter of the UCSF School of Dentistry and the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Khosla has donated an endowment to fund an international exchange program which allows the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residents to spend a month or more in an oral and maxillofacial surgery unit in another country, and many residents have taken advantage of this to visit the United Kingdom and Australia. The Khosla Family Foundation has also sponsored upgrades to equipment and facilities in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including the Dental Implant Center.

He is survived by his widow and their two sons: Sid, an ENT surgeon, and Ashok, a retired businessman and President of the Board of The Audubon Society.

"We will all miss Ved Khosla and his easygoing approach" says M. Anthony Pogrel, DDS, MD, Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
