Dr. Brian Bast Announced as Interim Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Dr. Brian BastUCSF Dentistry Dean John D.B. Featherstone is pleased to announce that Brian Bast, DMD, MD, Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), Chief of OMFS at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), and OMFS Residency Director, has been announced as the Interim Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, effective July 1, 2014.

Dr. Bast will work closely with outgoing department chair Dr. M. Anthony Pogrel to ensure a smooth transition, and has asked longtime OMFS faculty member Mehran Hossaini, DMD, to be Vice Chair of the department, which he has accepted.

Dr. Bast obtained his DMD from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1997 and his MD from the UC San Francisco School of Medicine in 2000.  He completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training at the UCSF School of Dentistry in 2003.

Dr. Bast joined the full time faculty in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UCSF in 2003. 

He maintains busy practices at UCSF, in the Medical Center, in the School of Dentistry, and at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

His clinical interests include the management of facial trauma and the surgical correction of dental facial deformities.

In 2010 Dr. Bast became the Residency Program Director for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at UCSF, and the Chief of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service at SFGH.  For the past 10 years he has dedicated his career to the education and training of students and residents in both dentistry and medicine.

Dean Featherstone asks that the entire UCSF community join with him in congratulating Dr. Bast and wishing him well as he embarks on this transition to his new duties, adding "I am looking forward to working with Drs Bast and Hossaini in their new roles, and I am very confident in their abilities."
