Lilliam Pinzón Awarded UC Global Health Institute GloCal Health Fellowship

Dr. Lilliam M PinzónDr. Lilliam M Pinzón, DDS, MS, MPH, is the recipient of a University of California Global Health Institute (UCGHI) GloCal Health Fellowship a career development fellowship sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty International Center (FIC), as well as a consortium at the UCGHI.  This consortium is comprised of UCSF, UCSD, UCLA, USD, 27 affiliated international sites across 16 countries, and institutes and centers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The fellowship will allow her to obtain deeper knowledge and experience working in international clinical studies, and to understand other risks to which the vulnerable population of Tijuana, Mexico is exposed so that in the future she might be able to initiate further studies.

Her mentors in this study are Dr. John S. Greenspan, Associate Dean for Global Oral Health at the UCSF School of Dentistry, and Dr. Roberto Carlos Zamudio from Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, Mexico.

Dr. Pinzón is also the recipient of a National Institute of Health/National Institute of Dental Craniofacial Research (NIH/NIDCR) K23 grant that allows her to work with community clinics that treat underserved pediatric populations. She obtained a UCSF Global Oral Health joint fellowship with her student, Ivy Fua, in 2013, and they are currently working in an international study in Colombia.

Dr. Pinzón holds a DDS from the University of Antioquia, Colombia; an MS, with a specialization in dental materials, from the University of Texas, Houston; and an MPH, with focus in Health Policy and Management, from UC Berkeley.  She obtained a Postdoctoral Fellowship and advanced training in clinical research at UC San Francisco.

She has more than 13 years of experience in laboratory and clinical and translational research in the United States and was appointed Assistant Adjunct Professor at the UCSF School of Dentistry in 2009.

Dr. Pinzón’s work focuses on pediatrics, public health, and dental materials in order to improve oral health for underserved populations.
