The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation's Research Recognition Award was presented to Dr. M. Anthony Pogrel, Chair of the UCSF School of Dentistry's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the 2012 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Annual Meeting Opening Ceremony.
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation's Research Recognition Award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the specialty through their research, emphasizing the foundation’s commitment to foster programs of scientific investigation in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Dr. Pogrel is Professor and Chair of UCSF Dentistry's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, with a joint appointment in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Surgery at UCSF Medicine. He has published more than 250 articles in peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. Dr. Pogrel’s research interests are varied, and he is particularly interested in studies relating to the facial nerves and salivary gland tumors.
Specifically, his areas of research include:
- The study of salivary hyaluronic acid, hyaluronidase and hyaluronidase inhibitors in saliva
- The effects of liquid nitrogen cryotherapy on osseous structures
- Anatomical studies of the lingual and facial nerves
- Biological behavior of salivary gland tumors
Dr. Pogrel has received numerous awards for his leadership in education and research in oral and maxillofacial surgery. In 2001 he was awarded the AAOMS Committeeman of the Year, and in 2009 he received the AAOMS William J. Gies Award for exemplary service to the profession.
