The UCSF School of Dentistry Class of 2018 was officially welcomed today at the school’s annual Dedication Ceremony in Cole Hall.
An elite group of students, only 5 percent of School of Dentistry applicants were admitted to the Class of 2018. The school continues to attract an increasingly diverse student population, with a wide range of personal, cultural and academic experiences that enrich the UCSF educational experience.
The School of Dentistry marked its 133rd anniversary last month, as the first dental school established west of the Mississippi River in 1881. Consistent with the oldest and greatest traditions of the school, the Class of 2018 also brings a strong dedication to the highest level of scholarship and service, and a profound personal investment in their chosen profession.
The highlight of the Dedication Ceremony was the presentation of a white coat to each student by a School of Dentistry faculty member. The ceremony marks the formal beginning of the students’ entry into the dental profession.
The ceremony was officiated by Dorothy Perry, PhD, Associate Dean for Education and Student Affairs. Dean John D.B. Featherstone, MSc, PhD, addressed the students, as well as Douglas Elwood Cowden, DDS (D ’65), Past President of the UCSF Dental Alumni Association and Aaron Russ Jensen, DDS, MDS (D ’07), the keynote speaker.
