The UCSF Dental Center plaza on Parnassus Heights was the setting for the School of Dentistry’s 133rd anniversary celebration on Oct. 3, following earlier celebratory events at San Francisco General Hospital, the Buchanan Dental Center and UCSF’s Laurel Heights campus.
More than 400 students, faculty and staff enjoyed refreshments on a beautiful autumn afternoon. Dean Featherstone joined the celebration, as well as UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood, who extended his congratulations to the school on its remarkable history.
The UCSF School of Dentistry began as the UC Dental College on September 7, 1881 with an initial budget of $510 and admitted its first 25 students the following year. It is the oldest dental education institution west of the Mississippi River.
Today it admits 90 students per year into its DDS program and a further 24 international students into its International Dentist Program, and has been the leading dental school recipient of National Institutes of Health research funding for more than 20 years.
This year is the 150th anniversary of the founding of UCSF.
