Steven W. Frank, DDS, MS, has been appointed Director of the Orthodontics Residency Program at the UCSF School of Dentistry, effective Jan. 5.
Dr. Frank comes to UCSF from 32 years in private practice, having obtained his DDS from Georgetown University in 1979 and his MS in Orthodontics from Loma Linda University in 1981. He first began teaching by lecturing on orthodontics to dentists and dental staff in the Roseville, Calif. area beginning about 15 years ago. A board-certified orthodontist, Dr. Frank has been a volunteer assistant professor at the UCSF School of Dentistry for two and a half years, initially teaching part time and offering informal lunchtime lectures. “I found I loved it,” he says, “and set as a goal to become a full-time orthodontic educator.”
Dr. Frank appreciates the broad welcome and support he has received from his faculty colleagues, Orthodontic residents, his division and department leadership.
“I look forward to building on the strengths of the residency program and to taking on new challenges,” he says. “I think my clinical background helps me appreciate what it takes to produce great clinical orthodontists, and so my goal is to continue to graduate great clinicians.”
After a career of orthodontic practice and informal teaching, “I always dreamed of returning to education,” says Dr. Frank. “My arrival at the UCSF School of Dentistry has been the realization of that dream.”
