UCSF Dentistry’s American Student Dental Association (ASDA) chapter hosted its third annual ASDA Admit Day on Saturday, May 3 to welcome incoming dental students, and more than half of the Class of 2019 attended.
Though the class officially begins dental school in mid-September, on Admit Day they met future classmates, faculty and each other for the first time, and received an in-depth preview of dental school during a full day of presentations, mini-lectures, hands-on pre-clinical lab time with upperclassmen, panel discussions and more.
ASDA at UCSF President Raion Sabo began the day with an encore presentation of the music video “Rather Be (a D1)” by the current first-year class, followed by words of welcome. Roger Mraz, of the Office of Graduate and Research Affairs, presented on research opportunities. Ramsen Warda, Class of 2018, walked the new students through a typical day in their first year, and Assistant Dean for Enrollment Management and Outreach James Betbeze offered the class a demographic “selfie” of academic achievements and cultural backgrounds:
- 89 accepted of 1,935 who applied (4.6 percent)
- Academic Average Mean Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) score 21.2 percent
- 62.9 percent female, 37.1 percent male
- 21.3 percent underrepresented minorities
- 17 countries of origin
Posting on the Class of 2019 Facebook page, members of the class were unanimous in their appreciation of the event and the extensive planning that contributed to making Admit Day, as one wrote, “well structured and packed with useful information.”
