More than 500 UCSF Dentistry alumni gathered at San Francisco’s historic Palace Hotel and at UCSF sites around the city on May 29 and 30 for a rousing 119th Scientific Session and UCSF Alumni Weekend conclusion to UCSF’s 150th anniversary year celebrations.
At Friday’s gala Dental Alumni Association luncheon, Dean Featherstone noted that Dentistry attendees outnumbered those from other schools by a considerable margin, and for the third year in a row. Led by recently installed Dental Alumni Association President Dr. Mark Dellinges, the event was dedicated to Drs. Sol “Bud” Silverman and Po-Ping Wong, both of whom passed away in 2014.
The Dental Alumni Association Medal of Honor was presented to Dr. Robert Wirthlin, Jr. (D’56) and to Mary Sonnenberger Porteous (DH’75, MSDH’12), and “Hail to California” was sung in memory of Dr. Wong, who traditionally led the singing of the anthem at the conclusion of the luncheon each year.
Dean Featherstone also took a moment to highlight alumni in attendance who have made significant contributions to the future of UCSF Dentistry, including Dr. Arnold Gazarian and his wife, Dianne. Their recent $500,000 gift established the Gazarian Presidential Professorship, matched by a $500,000 contribution from University of California President Janet Napolitano as part of a university-wide Presidential Professorship fundraising challenge.
Winners of the 119th Scientific Session Student Research Poster Competition were also recognized. First place was awarded to Caleb Tam, followed by Danielle Jaul,Minerva Loi, Yoomin Ahn, Moham Ansari and Edward Viloria, rounding out the six award recipients.
The weekend featured a robust program that included extensive continuing dental education offerings, a Dentistry Class of 1965 50th Reunion Medallion Ceremony, the Chancellor’s 150th Anniversary Breakfast and UCSF Nobel Laureate Roundtable, Discovery Talks, campus tours and more.
