Our knowledge of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws has grown considerably over the past few years and now includes several other medications besides bisphosphonates. This lecture will discuss current thoughts with regards to bisphosphonates, but even more with regards to some of the newer medications such as denosumab. A variety of techniques will be discussed including but not limited to: drug holiday, hyperbaric oxygen, pentoxifylline, and tocoferol.  We will also discuss the issue of patients with preexisting implants that are functioning successfully who are then placed on these medications.

Course Benefits:

  • To realize what the issues are today with regards to medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws.
  • To evaluate which treatments work and which do not to both prevent and treat medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws.
  • Be aware of general medical conditions that can occur in the oral cavity and which can be diagnosed by the general dentist.

Educational Objectives:

  • Recognize the manifestations of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws from both the clinical picture, medical history, and imaging.
  • Identify and explain the current range of therapies available for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws.
  • Determine the most appropriate treatments to prevent medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws.
  • Identify a number of systemic conditions which have manifestations that show in the oral cavity and realize which should be referred to a physician if the patient has not already been diagnosed.
