Today’s dental healthcare professionals are being asked to manage more medically-compromised patients.   These patients present higher risk for in-office medical emergencies.  In this course we will use a case-based approach to review the management of the most common medical emergencies the dental team may face.  We will not cover the one-in-a-million medical complication, but instead we will focus on giving practical information needed in a medical emergency.  The presentation will also include instruction on the proper use of the drugs and equipment used to manage medical emergencies.

Educational Objectives:

  • Identify the patients at highest risk for medical emergencies
  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of common medical emergencies
  • Develop differential diagnosis for common emergency presentations
  • Apply medical interventions to manage common medical emergencies
  • Describe the use of the drugs and equipment used to manage medical emergencies

Instructor: Joseph Best, DDS, PhD

Dr. Joseph Best is a 1989 graduate of Marquette University School of Dentistry and a part-time faculty member at the dental school in the Department of Surgical Sciences. He is the course director for the Medical Emergencies and Pharmacotherapeutics courses at MUSoD and lectures extensively in pharmacology, medicine, oral surgery and implant dentistry both at the dental school and in regional CE programs. Dr. Best received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology and a certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He is a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon and maintains a private practice with Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates in Waukesha, WI.
