Dr. Michael McMasterDean John D.B. Featherstone and Dr. Richard Jordan are pleased to announce that Dr. Michael McMaster will become the next Chair of UCSF Dentistry's Research and Clinical Excellence Day, succeeding Dr. Peter Loomer.

Research and Clinical Excellence Day has been an integral part of the UCSF School of Dentistry for many years, and offers students and research trainees the opportunity to showcase their outstanding research projects through posters and oral presentations. This event has also been the opportunity for our community to learn from leading scientists, including Nobel prize winners, about their careers and accomplishments in science.

Michael McMaster is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Cell and Tissue Biology. He is a developmental biologist and educator and who joined the UCSF faculty in 1994. Dr. McMaster is Director of the Biomedical Sciences stream with primary responsibility for the basic science curriculum in the first and second years of Dental School. He teaches gross anatomy, development, and neuroscience in the Dental, Medical and Graduate schools.

"I am excited to be part of what has become the flagship event in the School of Dentistry calendar," says McMaster.  "Having our whole community, especially students, in the same room for a day to share ideas, accomplishments and our vision for the future is a rare opportunity. I look forward to contributing what I can to making sure it is as successful as it has been in the past."

Dr. McMaster has a strong commitment to innovation and educational rigor in the basic sciences as a foundation for excellence in clinical dentistry. He is director of the School of Dentistry gross anatomy laboratory and has earned recognition for excellence in teaching. In addition to his role in the preclinical dental curriculum, he conducts research on human pregnancy and early development using embryonic stem cell model systems.
