This course is a concise, evidence-based overview in nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation and modifications to specific local anesthesia techniques. It will include a review of the properties, physiology, and administration of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation and alternative administration of local anesthesia will be presented.

Educational Objectives:

  • Appreciate the significance of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation in dentistry
  • Recognize the physical properties of nitrous oxide
  • Discuss the pharmacokinetic properties (interactions within the body) of nitrous oxide
  • Understand the steps for appropriate administration of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation
  • Review anatomy and target areas for better delivery of profound local anesthesia, with an emphasis in the inferior alveolar nerve block technique
  • Describe specific modifications and reason for modifications in various injection techniques
  • Restore confidence in the ability to successfully achieve profound local anesthesia

Instructor: Lynne Morgan, RDH, MS, MA

Ms. Lynne Morgan is an Adjunct Dental Hygiene Faculty, Division of Dental Hygiene and Division of Periodontology, teaches dental anatomy, local anesthesia, and nitrous oxide sedation to dental hygiene students and periodontal instrumentation to first- and second-year dental students. She is also involved in teaching local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation to practicing dental hygienists in a series of continuing education courses. Additional responsibilities include clinical dental hygiene instruction to second-year dental hygiene students, periodontal instrumentation to first- and second-year dental students, as well as clinical instruction to third- and fourth-year dental students. Her interests focus on curriculum and instructional design. She has received several teaching awards and is a committee member for Dental Hygiene Admissions. Ms. Morgan holds a Certificate in Dental Hygiene from Mott Community College, B.S. in Healthcare Administration from the University of Michigan-Flint, an M.S. in Health Education from the University of Michigan-Flint, and an M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Detroit Mercy. She joined the University in 2014.

CDE Coursework Units: 2

Tuition: $69 (Due to the Joint Providership of this program with ACDE, UCSF Faculty and Staff discounts are not available.)

Cancellation/Refunds:

Tuition refund, less a $25 cancellation fee, will be issued only for cancellations received in writing at least 3 business days prior to the start date of the course. No refunds will be issued for late cancellations or no-shows. We reserve the right to cancel any course due to circumstances beyond our control; under those circumstances we will refund all course fee payments. Please be aware that UCSF School of Dentistry CDE is not responsible for reimbursement of nonrefundable airline tickets or any other travel expenses in the event that a course is canceled.
