Advanced Imaging for the craniofacial imaging has evolved over the last 25 years. This lecture will showcase the basic principles of 3D imaging and how the technology has been applied to the dental office through the years. Attendees will be introduced to three-dimensional imaging, comparing it with the traditional two-dimensional assessments and exploring the benefits and drawbacks of these imaging modalities. The lecture will guide the attendee through detailed and illustrated examples of three-dimensional patient management strategies in the context of the daily practice. Both three-dimensional static and motion analyses will also be explored. The lecture also addresses growth changes of the craniofacial region, basic orthodontic treatment, surgical prediction and 4D jaw tracking.

Chung How Ka

Professor Kau is the Department Chair and tenured Professor at the Department of Orthodontics, University of Alabama, Birmingham. He obtained his dental degree from the National University of Singapore, and Orthodontic certification from both Cardiff University and University of Alabama, Birmingham. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (USA) and a Specialist Orthodontist on the Singapore Dental Council and the General Dental Council (UK). In Alabama, he holds the academic appointment of Professor in the Department of Surgery, Heersink School of Medicine, Senior Scientist at the Global Center for Craniofacial, Oral and Dental Disorders and UAB Microbiome Center. In addition, he also serves as the Director of the Craniofacial Orthodontia Clinic in partnership with the Children’s Rehabilitation Service and Medicaid of Alabama, and is the Craniofacial Orthodontist on the Cleft Craniofacial Team at Children’s Hospital of Alabama. These combined experiences shaped his commitment to treating craniofacial anomalies and dento- facial deformities. Apart from practicing clinical orthodontics, he is a researcher with a keen interest in clinical translational research focusing on technology-driven orthodontic applications, dento-facial deformities, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, accelerated tooth movement, and 4D jaw tracking. 

CDE Coursework Units: 2

Tuition: $69 (Due to the Joint Provider ship of this program with ACDE, UCSF Faculty and Staff discounts are not available.)

Cancellation/Refunds:

Tuition refund, less a $25 cancellation fee, will be issued only for cancellations received in writing at least 3 business days prior to the start date of the course. No refunds will be issued for late cancellations or no-shows. We reserve the right to cancel any course due to circumstances beyond our control; under those circumstances we will refund all course fee payments. Please be aware that UCSF School of Dentistry CDE is not responsible for reimbursement of nonrefundable airline tickets or any other travel expenses in the event that a course is canceled.
