Dr. Snehlata Oberoi, DDS, MDS, Associate Professor of Clinical Orofacial Sciences at the UCSF School of Dentistry, has completed the 2013 American Dental Education Association/AAL Institute for Teaching and Learning (ADEA/AAL ITL).
“The ADEA/AAL ITL has almost 400 alumni since its launch in 2006,” says N. Karl Haden, Ph.D., President of AAL. “Evaluations from participants and ongoing educational research conducted by our instructors keep the curriculum current and ensure that the program prepares faculty with teaching skills necessary to understand and communicate with today’s students.”
The curriculum is designed to provide participants with hands-on experience of key teacher tasks, and help them attain a higher level of excellence in evidence-based clinical and didactic modalities of dental education. Some of the topics covered include: instructional design and course planning, teaching in the classroom and the clinic, writing assessments, learning styles and critical thinking, mentorship, contemporary dental education models and academic career planning.
“The ADEA/AAL ITL is dental education’s premier program for faculty development in teaching and learning,” says Richard W. Valachovic, DMD, MPH; ADEA President and CEO. “The continued growth and popularity of the program shows the commitment of academic dental institutions and their faculty to excellence in teaching and learning.”
Dr. Oberoi provides teaching and supervision of Orthodontic and Pediatric dentistry residents and dental students on rotation in the Center for Craniofacial Anomalies, where she also provides assessment and treatment recommendations for children with craniofacial anomalies. In addition, she practices at the UCSF Orthodontic Clinic, where she treats these children.
Dr. Oberoi has published over 35 articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as four book chapters. She also serves as a reviewer for the Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal, the International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry, The Angle Orthodontist and the American Journal of Orthodontics. Her research focuses on developing new methods to assess the outcomes of treatment for cleft lip, cleft palate and other craniofacial anomalies. She also collaborates with the Center's medical geneticists on research seeking to identify genetic mutations, and how they affect dental and facial defects, in various craniofacial anomalies.
Dr. Oberoi is a member of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, the American Association of Orthodontists, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists and the Indian Orthodontic Society. Dr. Oberoi is a 2013 American Association of Orthodontists ITL Scholar.
