This course is aimed at providing three hours in total of CE which can be credited towards the DEA-MATE mandated hours for new or renewal application of DEA license. The course is intended to provide fundamental understanding on substance use disorders, and possible referral and management. Reviewing the Principles of sound Pain management: Safe pharmacological management of dental pain; acute and chronic pain.   Along with reviewing Substance abuse and addiction: Terminology, definitions; prevalence and incidence; drugs of abuse and addiction; identifying the risk factors; who is prone? (Note: All are welcome to take this course even if you did not attend Part 1, 2, or 3)

Educational Objectives:

  • Understand the fundamentals of reversal agents, de-addiction and rehabilitation
  • Learn how and when to refer these patients and to who

DAVIS C THOMAS  Instructor: Davis C Thomas, BDS, DDS, MSD, MSc Med, MSc

Dr. Davis Thomas completed his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from India. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and one year of Advanced Education in General Dentistry from NYU. While in private practice, he then went on to further his education in the following twenty years to include multiple master’s degrees including orofacial pain (Rutgers University), headache pain management (University of Edinburgh), and sleep medicine (University of Sydney). He is an associate clinical professor in the department of Orofacial pain and the program director of clinical preceptorship in General dentistry and comprehensive care. The experience and education Dr. Thomas has acquired over the years has allowed him to lecture extensively all around the world. He has been a commissioned officer in the United Sates Army since 2001. He also has multiple faculty appointments in national and international hospitals and universities. Currently, he is the director for OFP/TMD/Sleep medicine courses for Roseman University/Smile USA Academy. He also is the director of Shore TMJ LLC, a continuing education platform for mentoring students from all over the world on dental career guidance, orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine.

CDE Coursework Units: 1.5

Tuition: $59 (Due to the Joint Provider ship of this program with ACDE, UCSF Faculty and Staff discounts are not available.)

Cancellation/Refunds:

Tuition refund, less a $25 cancellation fee, will be issued only for cancellations received in writing at least 3 business days prior to the start date of the course. No refunds will be issued for late cancellations or no-shows. We reserve the right to cancel any course due to circumstances beyond our control; under those circumstances we will refund all course fee payments. Please be aware that UCSF School of Dentistry CDE is not responsible for reimbursement of nonrefundable airline tickets or any other travel expenses in the event that a course is canceled.
