Troy E. Daniels, DDS, MS, Professor Emeritus, Recalled in the UCSF School of Dentistry, Department of Orofacial Sciences and School of Medicine Department of Pathology, has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Section on Dentistry and Oral Health Sciences.
Dr. Daniels will be honored, along with other new AAAS Fellows, during the AAAS Annual Meeting in Chicago in February.
Dr. Daniels received his DDS in 1967 and later training in oral medicine and pathology from the UCSF School of Dentistry. He has been a member of its faculty since 1973, serving as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs under former Deans John Greene and Charles Bertolami.
On one wall of his office hangs a map of a remote Alaskan peninsula where his dental career began, as a public health practitioner. After two years he was called back to UCSF for a year, to run mobile clinics for the children of migrant farm workers.
He shared a part-time practice for four years with his former professor, Ben Braly, before leaving restorative dentistry to focus on oral medicine and oral pathology.
In addition to rounding out his career with more than a decade in the Dean's Office, he launched a clinic in the early 1970s dedicated to treating and shedding light on a then-mysterious disease known as Sjögren's syndrome, a cousin to rheumatoid arthritis. The clinic continues to operate today, and for several years Daniels co-led lead an NIH-funded research program on the disease, conducted at three US sites and in six foreign countries.
