UCSF Dentistry Dean John D.B. Featherstone and the UCSF School of Dentistry announce that John S. Greenspan, BSC, BDS, PhD, FRCPath, ScD [hc], FDSRCS [Eng], Distinguished Professor of Oral Pathology, Department of Orofacial Sciences, and Associate Dean for Global Oral Health at the UCSF School of Dentistry, will retire from UCSF at the end of June, 2014, and step down from his role as Associate Dean for Global Oral Health.
Says Dean Featherstone, "I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. John Greenspan for his many years of outstanding service to the School of Dentistry, and to the UCSF campus as a whole. I especially want to thank him for being a wonderful colleague and supporter during my time as Dean, first as Associate Dean for Research, and then as the first Associate Dean for Global Oral Health."
Dean Featherstone concludes: "John has made many contributions to the UCSF School of Dentistry, and his wise counsel and untiring efforts to provide vision for the school will be missed. Please join with me in thanking him and wishing him well in his new life."
Dr. John S. Greenspan is Distinguished Professor of Oral Pathology in the Department of Orofacial Sciences in the UCSF School of Dentistry and Associate Dean for Global Oral Health.
He was, until 2009, the first Associate Dean for Research of the UCSF School of Dentistry, in which position he established the school's annual Research and Clinical Excellence Day, as well as other key programs.
As Associate Dean for Global Oral Health, Dr. Greenspan has in a short time created an entirely new program in an emerging field, placing UCSF Dentistry in a leadership position.
As Chair of the Division of Oral Biology, from 1981 to 1988, Chair of the Department of Stomatology, from 1988 to 2001, and Coordinator of Basic Sciences, from 1981 to 1995, he led much of the faculty recruitment effort, research laboratory creation, and program growth that took the school to its current position of research preeminence among US dental schools.
Dr. Greenspan is also a Distinguished Professor of Pathology in the UCSF School of Medicine. He is Director-Emeritus of the AIDS Research Institute in the UCSF School of Medicine, which he led from 2003 to 2012, and is the founding Director of the world-renowned UCSF Oral AIDS Center, as well as the 30+ year old UCSF AIDS Specimen Bank. He was Director of the UCSF AIDS Clinical Research Center/California AIDS Research Center from 1992 to 2005.
His research interests include the global health aspects of AIDS. His own work is rooted in studies of oral aspects of AIDS and the role of viruses in oral epithelial and salivary gland lesions. He and his colleagues have made major contributions to HIV research and care, notably the discovery of the lesion hairy leukoplakia, its association with EBV, and the significance of this and other oral lesions in the natural history of HIV diseases.
He was the founding co-director (with Dr. Troy Daniels) of the NIH-funded International Sjögren’s Syndrome Registry (SICCA).
He has published over 300 papers and four books on oral aspects of AIDS, oral pathology, and immunopathology. He has been a featured speaker at many international meetings and has presented over 250 research papers, clinics, and postgraduate courses.
He is a Past-President of the American Association for Dental Research and the International Association for Dental Research, and has supervised and/or mentored over 120 physician/scientists, dentist/scientists and PhD scientists in aspects of pathology, AIDS/HIV, oral medicine and pathology and related topics.
He is an American Association for Dental Research (AADR) Distinguished Scientist Award recipient in 2010, and an American Dental Association (ADA) Gold Medal Award recipient in 2012.
The announcement of Dr. Greenspan's retirement follows closely the announcement that his wife and frequent collaborator Deborah Greenspan, BDS, DSc(Med), ScD(hc), FDSRCSEd(Hon), DSc(hc), DDS(hc), Chair of the Department of Orofacial Sciences (OFS), Professor of Oral Medicine and also a longtime distinguished member of the UCSF School of Dentistry's faculty, will also retire, and step down as OFS Chair at the end of June 2014.
They have both been associated with UCSF since 1972.
