It featured nine research presentations, two clinical case presentations and a record 61 poster presentations.

The day opened with words of welcome from Michael McMaster, PhD, Chair of the Research and Clinical Excellence Day Committee; UCSF School of Dentistry Dean John D.B. Featherstone, MSc, PhD; and for the first time, UCSF Chancellor Sam Hawgood, MB, BS.

Chancellor Hawgood cited Dentistry’s Research and Clinical Excellence Day as an especially strong example of the collaborative and interdisciplinary culture of science and clinical practice at UC San Francisco.

Laurie K. McCauley, DDS, MS, PhD, Professor and Dean, University of Michigan School of Dentistry, plenary speaker, presented on “Osteal Macrophages and Parathyroid Hormone: Partners in Bone Regeneration.” Her talk was especially well-received by an audience sharing many of Dean McCauley’s research interests.

The morning and afternoon oral presentations were chaired by relatively recent additions to the UCSF Dentistry faculty: Michelle Mendoza, PhD and Diego M. Ardenghi, DDS, MA (Educ), MSc. Oral presenters included Ruth Yan, Shaun Abrams, B. Shoghi Fareid, Raion Sabo, Yolanda Ho, Hamid Nurrohman, PhD, Shweta Dubey, BDS, Minerva Loi and Kjeld Aamodt, DDS.

The Outstanding Clinician Award was presented to Arun Sharma, BDS, MSc, Clinical Professor and Dipl. Am. Board of Prosthodontics, who delivered an engaging talk on “Prosthodontics and Clinical Excellence.” As he took the stage, Dr. Sharma was cheered by residents, staff and former students, including last year’s Outstanding Clinician Award recipient Sheila Brear, BDS, who introduced him.

The Mentor of the Year Award was presented by the John C. Greene Society to Benjamin Chaffee, DDS, MPH, PhD, who was named UCSF Dentistry’s Director of Global Oral Health in August.

Prior to closing remarks by Dr. McMaster and a well-attended reception amid student posters at the Millberry Union gym, the day concluded with the announcement of winners and presentation of awards by Associate Dean for Research Peter Sargent, PhD, who praised the organizers of the event and staff for their contributions -- in particular Dr. McMaster, the judging panel, and Roger Mraz of the Office of Graduate and Research Affairs
