Alma Sandino, a recent graduate of the UCSF School of Dentistry’s Master of Science in Dental Hygiene program, has received a 2015 Olav Alvares Award for an Outstanding Article by a Junior Scholar published in the Journal of Dental Education.
Her article, “Students from Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Groups Entering the Dental Hygiene Profession,” was published in the March 2014 issue. Emerita faculty Dorothy Rowe, MS, PhD, who is a co-author of the article, mentored Sandino in the program.
The editors of the Journal of Dental Education annually present the award for the four most outstanding articles written (as sole or main author) by a junior scholar in one of the following categories: assistant professor, instructor, resident, student or staff. The award was named in honor of Dr. Olav Alvares, editor of the Journal of Dental Education from 2000 to 2009, to encourage junior scholars to conduct and publish outstanding research.
The Olav Alvares Awards will be presented during the ADEA Annual Session in Boston in March.
