Oscar Humberto Reyna-BlancoThird-year dental student Oscar Humberto Reyna-Blanco has received a Henry Schein Cares Foundation Global Outreach Grant. The grant will support oral health screenings and fluoride varnish applications for children in rural communities in Malawi, in Southern Africa.

Reyna-Blanco’s project is a partnership with Hands at Work in Africa, and will benefit children who in most cases have never seen a dentist. Access to care is limited in Malawi, he explains, and the region was selected because many children there have been orphaned by parental death from HIV-AIDS, resulting in even greater disparities in access to dental care and health care generally.

The Henry Schein Cares Foundation’s mission is to promote health by helping to increase access to care in communities around the world.

In March, Reyna-Blanco learned that he has had an abstract selected for the European Orthodontics Society Congress, for which he will travel to Venice, Italy in June, and for the European Journal of Orthodontics.
