UCSF dental students were prominent among the honorees at the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship – San Francisco Bay Area’s Celebration of Service on Friday, May 15 at the Berkeley City Club.
UCSF Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Daniel Lowenstein’s keynote presentation, “Lining a Canoe,” was both a memoir and a parable of the value of teamwork. UCSF is a supporter of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship – San Francisco Bay Area.
2014 Schweitzer Fellows Valentina Zahran and Jean Calvo, third-year students, joined second-year students and 2015 fellows Jenny Garcia and Hengameh Jannati and other Bay Area health professions students in being recognized for projects that they had just completed or were about to begin.
2015 fellows Lauren Frisch and Adam Wandell were unable to attend.
Jean Calvo comments, “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to complete an Albert Schweitzer fellowship. The year was an amazing opportunity that allowed me to make a significant impact in my community and grow my skills in public service.”
Valentina Zahran designed and implemented an oral health education curriculum for female survivors of human sex trafficking, partnering with the Not For Sale Foundation. “In teaching these classes I know I had a positive impact on the trainees' lives, and learned as much from them as they did from me,” says Valentina. “I look forward to continuing as a lifetime member of the Schweitzer Fellowship. After a year of hard work, it was amazing to celebrate our journeys together and appreciate the lives we've changed for the better.”
