UCSF dental students are among the best-prepared in the nation as they leave school and enter the dental profession and postgraduate studies, indicated by a strong 94 percent pass rate on the recent Western Regional Examination Board exams, or WREBs.
“Congratulations to our wonderful students,” says Dean Featherstone, “and congratulations and thank you to all of the faculty and staff who make such a result a reality. We can be extremely proud of the performance of our students.”
There were months of careful preparation for the three-day weekend event by clinical staff. “Planning really began almost a year in advance,” says UCSF Dental Center’s David Gonzalez, who led the process. “WREB days are like regular clinic days, so a full compliment of staff need to be scheduled to support them, plus nine to 12 additional UCSF Dentistry staff to support the WREBs coordinators and examiners.”
There are many other details, as well, including clinic closures, dispensary re-stocking, parking passes and more. “All of this kicks into high gear two to three months out,” says Gonzalez.
Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs Dr. Mark D. Kirkland and Clinic Manager Maria Guerra both cited Gonzalez and his team for a superbly planned and executed WREBs event. “They did a great job,” says Kirkland.
“It calms and reassures students to see familiar UCSF Dentistry faces in the dispensary, on the floor and elsewhere during the WREBs” adds Gonzalez. “It relieves a little bit of the pressure and helps to make the WREBs like just another day in the clinic.”
