Brian Bast, DMD, MD, health sciences associate clinical professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS), chief of OMFS at San Francisco General Hospital, and OMFS residency director, has been appointed chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Bast has served as interim chair since July 1, 2014. During this time, he has worked with faculty and staff to set the course for the department for the future. He has been very effective in managing the department and in recruiting several new faculty. His appointment as chair follows a very successful year as interim chair and was done after consultation with faculty in OMFS, the leadership of the School of Dentistry and of the UCSF campus.
Dr. Bast obtained his DMD from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1997 and his MD from the UC San Francisco School of Medicine in 2000. He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery training at the UCSF School of Dentistry in 2003. Dr. Bast joined the full-time faculty in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at UCSF in 2003.
He maintains busy practices at UCSF, in the medical center, in the School of Dentistry, and at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. His clinical interests include the management of facial trauma and the surgical correction of dental facial deformities.
In 2010 Dr. Bast became the residency program director for the OMFS Residency Program at UCSF, and the Chief of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service at SFGH. For the past 10 years he has dedicated his career to the education and training of students and residents in both dentistry and medicine.
