January 30 Part I: The Upper Airway During Deep Sedation

Upper airway challenges during deep sedation are not readily amenable to complex algorithmic protocols by those with limited recent experience in advanced airway maneuvers, especially when there is no intent for intubation. This presentation will highlight techniques of patient screening, depth of anesthesia limit setting and airway management in a clinically relevant and practical manner.

Educational Objectives:

  • Identify and characterize all possible causes of challenges with ventilation during deep sedation.
  • Develop, share, rehearse and execute simple, structured responses to all possible causes of the lost airway during deep sedation in the OMFS office.

Instructor: Robert C. Bosack, DDS

Dr. Bosack graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1974 and received his DDS from Loyola University School of Dentistry, magna cum laude. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and currently serves on Examination Committee for that board. In addition to his full-time private practice, Dr. Bosack is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois College of Dentistry.

January 30 Part II: Is Your Team Ready to Manage That Anesthetic Emergency That Could Happen at Any Time?

The anesthesia team must have preventive measures in place and established procedures and protocols for managing any and all emergencies that may occur. The keys to the team’s success are well-designed checklists, effective cognitive aids and regularly conducted emergency simulation training. This presentation will utilize closed claim examples in each of these categories to emphasize the various organizational tools, training concepts and digital technology that your team can use to make sure that you are prepared.

Educational Objectives:

  • Discuss current digital technology to create checklists and cognitive aids which rely on previously prepared procedures and protocols to guide the team effort.
  • Identify tools which will enable your team to set up an emergency preparedness plan in your office.
