This course meets the requirements of the California Dental Board for renewal of the Oral Conscious Sedation Permit (biannually). In addition, course information is a review for any dentist, who is using oral conscious sedation or intends to use oral sedation on minor patients 13 years of age or younger.
This comprehensive course will cover:
- Oral conscious sedation law update
- Sedative drugs’ pharmacology
- Understanding pediatric airway anatomy, and airway management - virtual demonstration
- Physical evaluation of the patient including risk assessment
- Drug selections for oral conscious sedation, including morphine.
- Monitoring and maintaining complete patient’s sedation records (blank forms for OCS will be electronically available)
- Discuss elements of the dental office and staff training needed to provided services
- Retrospective study of Morphine vs. Meperidine effectiveness in pediatric oral sedation

Instructors:
Thuan Le DDS, PhD - Dr. Le is Associate Clinical Professor and a former Director of UCSF Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program. He earned his DDS degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1999, and completed pediatric dentistry residency program at UCSF in 2002. Dr. Le also earned his PhD in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences at UCSF in 2007. He has been practicing pediatric dentistry in his faculty practice, and operation room for special-needs children at the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay.
Hung Nguyen, MD - Dr. Nguyen is a full-time Associate Clinical Professor in Anesthesia Department at UCSF. He graduated from medical school with MD degree at the University of CA, Davis. He completed anesthesia residency program, and both pediatric anesthesia and pediatric cardiac fellowships from UCSF. Currently, Dr. Nguyen is an Attending in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology at UCSF.
Ray Stewart, DMD, MS - Dr. Stewart received his DMD from University of Oregon, a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry following a residency and fellowship at UO Health Science Center with a MS degree in Medical Genetics. He is a Full Professor where he directs the Oral Conscious Sedation program and is involved in several research projects and provides patient care in Faculty Practice and in the operating room at Benioff Children’s Hospital.
Thomas Tanbonliong, DDS - Dr. Tanbonliong is an Associate Professor and Director, Advanced Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry. He received his dental degree from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the International College of Dentists.
